Purpose
To report on white-collar crime and add six new public interest repositories.
The Investigative Journalism Foundation is a nonprofit newsroom focused on public interest journalism. It is a new kind of media outlet, built around databases on who donates to politicians across Canada, who lobbies them, and how the government spends money.
As a nonprofit, nonpartisan media outlet, its primary purpose is to serve the public. It does this by publishing in-depth investigative journalism that speaks truth to power. Its databases are also used by other journalists, academics, policymakers, and individuals seeking to increase transparency and strengthen Canadian democracy.
With the support of the Tiny Foundation, The Investigative Journalism Foundation is expanding its coverage of white-collar crime, deepening coverage of issues relevant to the west coast of Canada, and adding six new public interest repositories, including Canada’s biggest database of internal government documents (four million pages and counting). It will also build databases tracking politicians' financial disclosures and government contracting decisions.
The Investigative Journalism Foundation believes in a collaborative model and is proud to partner with other media outlets, and post-secondary institutions to ensure its journalism has as wide a reach as possible. It is supported by individuals who believe in the importance of public interest journalism. It believes radical transparency is vital for media outlets as well as politicians and it discloses the names of all its donors. It is also proud to be a member of the National News Media Council of Canada, the Institute for Nonprofit News and the Fast Forward 2024 Accelerator Program.
The Tiny Foundation is excited about all The Investigative Journalism Foundation has already accomplished and its auspicious future.
