Purpose

To investigate how to improve physical health by changing thoughts and beliefs.

Dr. Alia Crum is exploring how psychological mindsets can profoundly influence physical and mental health. Dr. Crum's Stanford Mind & Body Lab investigates the ways in which subjective beliefs and expectations can alter objective reality in areas such as diet, exercise, stress, and medical treatment.

One of Dr. Crum's most influential studies showed that hotel room attendants experienced significant health improvements when informed about the exercise benefits of their work, despite no changes in physical activity. Another notable study found that participants' physiological responses to milkshakes varied based on their beliefs about the drinks' calorie content, even when the milkshakes were identical. Her research on stress mindsets has demonstrated that viewing stress as a challenge rather than a threat can lead to better performance and well-being.

Recently, Dr. Crum co-authored a paper on using social and behavioral science to support the COVID-19 pandemic response, highlighting the importance of psychological factors in shaping health behaviors and outcomes.

Through her innovative research, Dr. Crum aims to harness the power of the mind to improve health outcomes and promote overall well-being. Her work has profound implications for healthcare, wellness, and personal development, underscoring the vital role of psychological factors in shaping our physical and mental health. The Tiny Foundation is proud to support Dr. Crum's groundbreaking research at the intersection of psychology and health.
